Thinking with AI
Teaching Scenarios

When working through activities around AI usage in the classroom, sometimes it can be helpful to have examples to hand. This scenario involves a Year 6 teacher and three students who show three different ways of working with AI.

Scenario Background

Miss Smith is teaching about Ancient Rome to her students in Year 6. As an introduction to the topic, she has set up a chatbot on a student-friendly platform where students can chat with an 'ancient Roman' character.

Note the following student priot knowledge: They have already had one lesson where they learned the basics - when this time period was, where in the world Rome is, the fact that they had an empire and a formidable army.

The teacher introduces the chatbot to the class by saying "Now that you know some basic facts about Rome, I want you to chat with an AI character to find out more about what life would have been like for someone in this period. You have ten minutes. At the end of the ten minutes, you should have written down five facts about life in Ancient Rome ready to share with the rest of the class."

The following documents show the learning journeys of three students, beginning with the final submitted product (a yellow post-it note) followed by the full AI transcript with AI output on the left and student input on the right. Documents open as a PDF.
